One of the worst things about having fair skin is the constant need to lay out day after day just to achieve a summer glow. I have many friends who can lay out for a just couple of hours and develop a tan that would take me nearly a month. It seems that every time I go to the beach with friends, I’m the one burning within the first 30 minutes. I’m constantly slapping more sunscreen on while they’re busy developing a beautiful golden tan. I hate it. Trust me, I know! I have very fair skin. I have tried every kind of sun tanning lotion that you can imagine. None of it seems to work. By the time I do manage to get some color, summer’s already half way over! I’m just starting to look slightly darker than I did months ago.
So what can I do about it? Have I found a tanning lotion that works? Yes, the good news is that I have! I’ll also share a couple tips on how to tan fair skin that personally helped me.
But before I get into that I want to say that there is no such thing as safe tanning. I’m sure you are already aware of this and I promise I am not going to badger you with information you already know. There is however ways to reduce the risk of damage to your skin and these are the practices I go with. Tanning is a personal choice and I am by no means an expert on the subject. After all you didn’t end up on this page just to be lectured. You want to find out the best ways of achieving a dark tan and hopefully these tips and reviews will help you.
Melanocytes are responsible for producing melanin in the human body. Two types of melanin are produced – pheomelanin, which is red, and eumelanin, which is very dark brown. The body produces these in order to protect us against the sun’s powerful rays by absorbing solar radiation such as UVA and UVB.
The first type of exposure (UVA) radiation causes oxidation of already existing melanin which in turn leads to skin darkening. The amount of melanin does not change however and the effects are short lived. The second type of exposure (UVB) radiation is mainly responsible for causing an increase in the amount of melanin produced in order to protect the body from too much UV exposure such as sun burns. The tan created from UVB exposure lasts much longer than the oxidation of pre-existing melanin and it usually takes about 72 hours before you can actually see it.

Useful Tips On How To Tan Fair Skin
So now that we are aware of the dangers, here are some tips on how to tan fair skin. Hopefully these tips will help others like myself!
Tanning Tip #1: Less Is More
One of the things that really helped me was to limit my exposure time in the sun to shorter intervals. Well duh, that’s kind of obvious right? Yes and no.
Most people (or at least most of the people that I know) will sun bathe until they feel themselves starting to burn or can physically see themselves reddening before they pull the plug. This is a terrible idea and very dangerous no matter what skin tone you have. You are damaging your skin and increasing your chances of melanoma which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Just don’t do it. On top of that, you will end up rocking the tomato look for days or more (depending on how bad the sun burn is) and that’s just not cute. That tan that you worked for will usually end up peeling off and you’re back to square one. I know we want to achieve that dark tan but allowing yourself to burn is just not worth it. Be patient, be smart about it and it will come!
What I’ve found that personally works for me is starting off very slow.
The first day that I decide to start the sun bathing process, I lay out for no more than 20 minutes . I tan 10 minutes per side. Not everyone tans the same and it’s wise to apply a sunscreen (at least SPF 15) around 30 minutes before laying out. Pick a time before noon and after 3 PM as the sun’s rays are often too harsh between those times. I continue this process daily and increase my sun bathing times in 5-10 minute increments, granted that my skin can handle it and I have not burned. If you remain patient and continue this process, I promise you will see much better results.
I’m not going to lie. You won’t be a tanned goddess but I would much rather have a healthy golden glow than risk damaging my skin and sporting the tomato look. If you stick with it and dedicate time, your skin will be able to handle more sun exposure and you will start to tan faster.
Tanning Tip #2: Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
If you be good to your skin, your skin will be good to you. Honestly, I can’t stress this enough. One thing that majorly helped me develop and maintain a tan was keeping my skin constantly hydrated.
After I finish with my daily sun bathing routine (see Tip #1) I jump in the shower to cleanse off the sweat, oils, SPF, etc. There is a debate as to whether you should wait to shower since a tan usually takes 24-48 hours to develop. I personally don’t buy into this as I don’t see how a shower can wash off a tan. Plus I really don’t want to walk around all smelly and grimy for 48 hours. Yuck! I’ve never noticed a difference and my tan has always remained after showering. Once I am done showering I immediately apply soothing lotion to my entire body. I not only do this once I am showered but at least one more time during the day and once before I go to bed. This has helped my skin tremendously.
